The rise of online retailers, and how mailing bags can help
Unless you’ve been in a coma, or living in a cave for the past decade, you will be aware of the astronomical rise in the number of people selling online, and the impact it’s had on physical stores (and the retail industry in general).
In an article from Financial Times written in December last year, it was reported that Great Britain is spending more money online per person than any other developed country, with consumers shelling out almost £2,000 every year for online items. This has obviously been aided by widespread broadband access and the reliability of the UK’s postal service, with our broadband services in particular being much more advanced than other European nations.
This is, unsurprisingly, having a serious impact on physical retail stores, with retail parks as well as the high street facing empty properties and reduced spending. Previously big names like Homebase, HMV and Game have seen huge numbers of store closures, and stores like Comet and MFI have disappeared altogether, with many electrical and appliance retailers taking the biggest hit thanks to the increased ease of buying these kind of items online.
But, it’s not all doom and gloom!
Whilst no-one likes to hear of stores closing and jobs being lost, the rise in online retail doesn’t have to be the end of our favourite brands – it just means they need to adapt their strategy.
The increased appetite of the general public for online brands also grants smaller businesses that can’t afford to buy or rent commercial property a fantastic opportunity to sell their products to the market, just like the big boys do!
